September 2008
As Consumers Across the Globe Race to Quality, Toyota's, Honda's, Nissan's, and
Mazda's Global Output Soars to Meet Demand
By James B. Bleeker
Toyota Motor Corporation's
worldwide car and truck output rose 10.2% in July 2008, over July 2007,
to 812,147 vehicles.
Honda Motor Company's worldwide
car and truck output soared 17.7% in July 2008 to 342,152 vehicles.
Nissan Motor Company's worldwide
car and truck output soared 26.8% in July 2008 to 315,975 vehicles.
Mazda Motor Corporation's
worldwide car and truck output soared 25.5% in July 2008 to 126,025
vehicles.
This quest to meet consumer demand for
quality comes at a time when General Motors Corporation, Ford
Motor Company, and Chrysler LLC are shuttering plants, losing
U.S. market share, and posting staggering losses.
The contrast in quality between Toyota
and Honda, on the one hand, and General Motors and Chrysler, on the
other, is sharp. Toyota's 5-year Reliability Percentrank is .89 and
Honda's is .84, while Chrysler's is .38 and GM's is .31. The following
charts help depict the contrast in quality between the two pairs of
manufacturers.
