1953 Consumer Reports introduces its first automotive issue. 1966 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its first Toyota Corolla. 1967 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its first Toyota Corolla in North America. circa 1974 The Toyota Corolla achieves Mercedes line reliability, and a fine car becomes one of the world's finest. This was the first assault on Mercedes' monopoly on high reliability.1 circa 1977 The Toyota line achieves Mercedes line reliability, and the monopoly becomes a duopoly.1 circa 1980 The Honda line achieves Toyota-Mercedes reliability, and the duopoly becomes a triopoly.1 (In the latter half of the 1980s, Mercedes' reliability standing began a decade-plus decline, and today it is very distant from those of Toyota and Honda.) 1989 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its first Lexus LS400. 1995 Nissan Motor Company sells its first Infiniti I30. 1997 Toyota Motor Corporation sells the world's first mass-produced gas-electric hybrid - the Toyota Prius. 2000 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its first Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid in North America. April 29, 2001 The Auto on Info website is first published. Its primary features were then the charts and tables of auto Reliability Index Values, the 2001 Auto Review, and an auto durability page. 2001 Auto on Info expands its reliability and durability coverage and introduces Mini-Surveys, in part, to gather information on other measures of quality. 2002 Auto on Info introduces its page of Auto Manufacturer Awards and Honors for quality achievements. September 2003 Auto on Info introduces the concept of natural market share. May 2005 At age 39 years, the Toyota Corolla has cumulative sales exceeding 30 million in over 140 countries.2 November 2005 General Motors Corporation announces plans to shutter 12 facilities in North America. April 2006 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its 500,000th Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid worldwide.5 November 2006 Auto on Info introduces true value computations for motor vehicles. January 2007 Harris Interactive announces that Toyota Motor Corporation placed within the Top 10 and General Motors Corporation and Ford Motor Company placed within the Bottom 10 in its annual corporate reputation survey, an occurrence that suggests that auto quality information is being increasingly broadly disseminated. February 2007 The Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler AG announces plans to close one assembly plant and one distribution facility and reduce shifts at two assembly plants.3 This will translate into a cut in production capacity of 400,000 motor vehicles.3 Cumulatively, since May 2005 the Big Three - General Motors Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and the Chrysler Group - have cut, or have announced plans to cut, production capacity at 64 U.S. plants, per Sean McAlinden, vice president of research at the Center for Automotive Research in Michigan.3 These cumulative cuts in production capacity are a contribution to North American automotive quality that was made by U.S. consumers in their quality-driven, value-conscious4 exercise of purchasing power and may be one of the greatest contributions to global automotive quality to be seen in the 21st century. April 2007 Auto on Info introduces its Green and Clean auto news menu page. May 2007 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its 1,000,000th gas-electric hybrid worldwide.6 April 2008 Toyota Motor Corporation sells its 1,000,000th gas-electric Prius worldwide. Toyota estimates that the Prius has reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 4.5 million tons through April 30, 2008. June 2008 General Motors Corporation announces plans to shutter four more North American plants. 1 Source: The reliability tables in Consumer Reports Buying Guides of the mid-1970s through the late-1980s
