The Canadian Automobile Association's Engineering Excellence
Awards
by James Bleeker
From 1983 to 2003, the Canadian Automobile Association had given its
Pyramid Award for Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction as a reward for "vehicle
engineering excellence in terms of actual, long-term, reliable performance,"
based on data collected from CAA's annual Vehicle Ownership Survey. The
following chart depicts the number of these awards received by each
automobile
manufacturer.

The number of models of each auto manufacturer within CAA's 2003 Top 10 for
engineering excellence is depicted in the following chart.

Placing first and second, respectively, were the 1997-2001
Camry and the 1998-2001 Sienna minivan, the 2003 Pyramid Award
recipients. Other Toyota products in the Top Ten list were the
2000-2002 Echo, the 1993-1997 Corolla, the 1992-1996 Camry, the
1996-1999 Tercel, and the 1991-1995 Tercel. Honda
products that made this list were the 1998-2002 Accord and the 1997-2001
CR-V, the only SUV on the list. Nissan's model on the list is the 2000-2002
Sentra.

The Canadian Automobile Association
groups vehicles by model generation, awards engineering
excellence to such generations, and terms such
generations models. |
The number of models of each manufacturer within CAA's 2002 Top 10 for
engineering excellence is depicted in the following chart.

First on the 2002 Top Ten list was the Toyota Corolla for model
years 1993-1997, second was the Honda CR-V for model years
1997-2001, and third was the Toyota Tercel for model years
1996-1999. The Toyota Camry held three spots in the top ten -
fourth for model years 1997-2001, fifth for model years
1992-1996, and ninth for model years 1988-1991. The Hyundai
Accent for model years 1995-1999 was number eight.
Note that the Toyota Camry for model years
1988-1991 placed more highly than any of the numerous
more recent generations of models of Ford Motor Company, Chrysler
Corporation, and General Motors Corporation.
