The 2013 Auto Reliability Grade Point Averages (GPAs) and Grades for Motor Vehicles Sold in North America:
The Complete Table and Charts Depicting the Overall Reliability GPAs of the Top 15 and Worst 15 Cars and Trucks in 2013 and the Automobile Manufacturer Shares of the 30 Best and the 30 Worst Cars and Trucks in 2013

(If you are using the Mozilla Firefox browser, it is best to click the refresh button once, or twice, to ensure that you are viewing the entire page, as it seems that Firefox is graphics and/or data-rich challenged. If you are using Google Chrome, the drop-down menu to the left works only hesitantly. The side menus of site manager's other two auto quality websites www.CarsOnInfo.net and www.CarQualityInfo.net are more Google friendly.)

The 2013 Table

This page provides 2013 auto reliability ratings and auto reliability rankings in a table listing most of the convertibles, coupes, sedans, hatchbacks, wagons, minivans, sport-utility vehicles (SUVs and XUVs), and pickup trucks sold in the U.S. It expresses the auto reliability ratings and auto reliability rankings, and makes available auto reliability comparisons and auto reliability contrasts, using the Auto Reliability Grade Point Average, or Auto Reliability GPA. This auto reliability index is used as it is an easy-to-understand, but detailed, auto reliability measure, and is familiar to many having attended secondary school and nearly all who have received some post-secondary education. The page also employs Auto Reliability Grades as a reliability index. This measure of auto reliability differences, although less detailed, is valuable as it is familiar to all persons having attended primary school. The Auto Reliability GPA is an automobile reliability statistic that is obtained from Consumer Reports' auto reliability survey data summarized in the reliability tables of (1) Consumer Reports: New Car Buying Guide: 2013, (2) Consumer Reports: Used Car Buying Guide: 2013, and (3) the April 2013 issue of the Consumer Reports magazine.

The Reliable Two, Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company, appear first in the table, because of their rather singular stature; the remaining automobile manufacturers are listed alphabetically. Ford Motor Company's offloaded lines - Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo - are listed as manufacturers.

Letter grades for automobile reliability are determined thusly: A if the Auto Reliability GPA is 3.50 to 4.00, B if the Auto Reliability GPA is 2.50 to 3.49, C if the Auto Reliability GPA is 1.50 to 2.49, D if the Auto Reliability GPA is 0.50 to 1.49, and F if the Auto Reliability GPA < 0.50.

Reliability GPAs for 4 age ranges are given so that the visitor may examine more thoroughly the age range that is of greater interest to him or her. As well, an Overall Reliability GPA, the average of the 4 age-range Reliability GPAs, and a Minimum Reliability GPA, the minimum of the 4 age-range Reliability GPAs, is provided.

Chart of the 2013 Reliability GPAs of the Top 15 and Bottom 15 Cars and Trucks

Chart of the Auto Reliability GPAs of the 15 Best and 15 Worst Autos in 2013

Note that all of the top 15 cars and trucks have a Reliability Grade of A and that all of the 15 worst cars and trucks have a Reliability Grade of F.

Charts of Manufacturer Shares of 30 Best Cars and Trucks in 2013

With regard to manufacturer shares of the 30 best automobile, I give two charts for 2013. The first chart depicts company shares of the 30 best cars, trucks, and SUVs that offer at least 3 model years of data. This permits a comparison with last year's chart of manufacturer shares of the best.

Chart of auto manufactruer shares of the 30 best cars and trucks in 2013. Toyota Motor Corporation acounts for 66.7% of the best, and Honda Motor Company - the remaining 33.3%.

Unlike last year (when Ford, Nissan, Mazda, and Porsche each contributed small percentages), this year Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company accounted for all of the top 30 offering 3 or more model years of data.

The next chart relaxes the stricture of requiring 3 or more model years of data and depicts car maker shares of the 30 best vehicles offering only 2 or more model years of data.

Chart of auto maker shares of the 30 best cars and trucks offering 2 or more model years of data in 2013. Toyota Motor Corporation accounts for 70%, and Honda Motor Company accounts for the remaining 30%.

With this relaxed restriction, still only two manufacturers - Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor Company - account for all of the 30 best cars, trucks, and sport-utility vehicles, and Toyota increases its share of the top motor vehicles in America. And both charts point to a competition of two at the top end of the quality spectrum in 2013.

Chart of Manufacturer Shares of 30 Worst Cars and Trucks in 2013

The next chart depicts manufacturer shares of the 30 worst cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans in 2013.

Chart of auto maker shares of the 30 worst cars and trucks in 2013.

Note that General Motors is experiencing increasing competition at the bottom end of the spectrum. Also note the absence of Toyota and Honda at this end of the spectrum.

In summary, the best automobiles are concentrated in two automobile manufacturers, but the worst automobiles are quite broadly distributed among motor vehicle manufacturers.

Caution      When the number of model years of data (appearing in the far right column) for a vehicle is limited to more recent years, the reliability GPAs, Average GPA, and Minimum GPA of that vehicle may be less reflective of the vehicle's reliability over a longer period of time.

The method of computation of the GPAs is probably familiar to nearly every college, technical school, and high school student. A Grade Point of 4.00 (that is, an A) is given to a Consumer Reports Used Car Verdict of "Much Better Than Average," a GP of 3.00 (that is, a B) is given to a CR "Better Than Average" rating, a GP of 2.00 (that is, a C) to an "Average" rating, a GP of 1.00 (that is, a D) to a "Worse Than Average" rating, and a GP of 0.00 (that is, an F) to a "Much Worse Than Average" rating. A Grade Point Average (GPA) is an average of the Grade Points and is computed using Microsoft's Average(a:b,[c:d],...) function. The Overall GPA given in the table and chart above is the average of the four 4-year GPAs.

The 100 Worst Cars in America in 2013

The 100 Worst Cars in America in 2013 offers a list of the worst cars and trucks available in the U.S. It uses AutoOnInfo.net’s Overall Reliability GPA covering model years 2003 to 2012 for ranking pickup trucks, sport-utility vehicles (SUVs), minivans, family cars, wagons, small cars, hatchbacks, sport/sporty cars, coupes, convertibles, upscale cars, and luxury cars in order to aid consumers in avoiding a vehicle that may require a larger number of repairs and a greater number of expensive repairs. To this end, it includes each car’s reliability GPA and grade and the number of model years upon which the GPA and grade are based, as well as brand and manufacturer GPAs for comparison and contrast and for better assessing long term performance and ownership expenses. Also, near the end of the book are a chapter listing the next 25 worst cars (31 by tie), with GPAs and number of model years, and chapters giving brand and manufacturer shares of the 125 (131 by tie) Worst Cars in America in 2013.

AutoOnInfo.net's Car Quality Series, Volume 2: Brand Quality for Model Years 1985 to 2006 and Effect on Brand Market Shares from 1985 to 2009

This volume of AutoOnInfo.net’s car guide series offers consumers and researchers an historical summary of the reliability and durability of car and truck brands and examines how these brands have fared in their U.S. market shares. It uses 6-year-old model entries in Consumer Reports’ Used Car to Avoid – also termed Vehicles to Avoid and Worst Cars, Year by Year – and CR’s reliability charts to ascribe quality grades to automobile brands for model-year groups 1985 to 1989, 1990 to 1994, 1995 to 1999, 2000 to 2004, 2005 to 2006, and 1985 to 2006. In addition to ascribing quality grades to each brand, it provides a chart that plots the number of the brand’s 6-year-old model entries in CR’s vehicles to avoid. To examine the effect that a brand’s reliability and durability has had on sales, two or more charts depicting the brand’s U.S. market shares for calendar years 1985 to 2009 are given. These grades and charts and the author’s comments impart an historical perspective that sheds light on the present condition of surviving vehicle lines and their future prospects, individual and institutional shortcomings, and what effect these may have on the U.S.
